Cooling technology
Electric chambers carry their own refrigeration system. Nitrogen cabins are cheaper to buy but need a recurring gas supply.
Whole-body cryotherapy is a capital investment, and the sticker price of the chamber is only part of it. This guide explains what actually drives the price, what the market currently charges, and which running costs decide whether a chamber pays for itself.
Electric chambers carry their own refrigeration system. Nitrogen cabins are cheaper to buy but need a recurring gas supply.
A single-person chamber, a two-person chamber and a walk-in multi-person chamber sit in different price classes.
Lower application temperature, shorter pre-cooling time and more sessions per day all raise the engineering effort – and the price.
Exterior finish, interior lighting, engine cabinet position and control options change the final figure.
Power connection, room preparation, access route and, for nitrogen systems, ventilation and oxygen monitoring.
Response times, spare-part availability and on-site service differ substantially between suppliers.
The figure on a data sheet is not automatically the temperature your customers stand in. A 2021 expert consensus notes that manufacturers quote −110 to −195 °C for cryosaunas while −10 to −42 °C were measured during use; a 2023 measurement study found only −76 °C at the centre of a chamber set to −94 °C – and the temperature rises further with every person inside. For the cold stimulus, only the real air temperature at the body counts.
That is why MECOTEC has built electric chambers since 1996 that generate and hold their temperature themselves: no refill breaks, no gas cloud, and a refrigeration circuit that readjusts between sessions instead of fading. And that is why every MECOTEC data sheet shows both values – the real room temperature and the windchill value of the air flow.
Not windchill, not the injection temperature.
For every model we state the real room temperature (cryo:one −85 °C up to cryoair multi −110 °C) and, in addition, the windchill value.
Empty or occupied, and after how many consecutive sessions?
MECOTEC chambers are built for continuous operation – up to 300 sessions a day with one cryoair multi, because the refrigeration on board keeps readjusting.
A trial session with your own data logger is common practice, and every supplier should make it possible.

Warranty period, response time, spare parts – in writing.
MECOTEC offers all-inclusive service contracts with remote monitoring and warranty periods of up to five years, depending on model and service contract. What the warranty covers stays out of your calculation.

Independent industry price overviews name the following ranges. They are orientation values, not quotations – the actual figure depends on the configuration.
Partial-body cabin; lower purchase price, recurring liquid-nitrogen supply for every session.
Own refrigeration system on board; no gas, no oxygen monitoring, runs on electricity alone.

The decisive number for a commercial operator is the cost per session over the service life. Nitrogen systems shift cost from the purchase into daily operation: every session consumes liquid nitrogen that has to be ordered, stored and refilled, and rooms need oxygen monitoring. Electric chambers move that cost forward into the hardware and then run on electricity alone.
A realistic comparison therefore adds up, over five to ten years, the following items:
MECOTEC electric chambers are nitrogen-free and run on a three-phase connection. You also need a suitable indoor space, an access route for delivery, and a position for the engine cabinet (right, left or rear, depending on model). The published requirements for the current models are:
| Model | Capacity | Real room temp. (down to) | Windchill (down to) | Sessions/day | Connected load |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| cryo:one | 1 person | −85 °C | −120 °C | 25 | 25 A |
| cryo:one⁺ | 2 persons | −85 °C | −122 °C | 100 | 32 A |
| 1COOL | 1 person | −100 °C | −145 °C | 80 | 32 A |
| 2COOL | 2 persons | −110 °C | −160 °C | 120 | 50 A |
| cryoair flex | 2 persons | −85 °C | −125 °C | 100 | 32 A |
| cryoair multi / multi⁺ | up to 5 persons | −110 °C | −148 °C | 300 | 63 A |
Most commercial buyers do not pay a chamber out of cash flow. Financing and leasing spread the investment across the period in which the chamber earns revenue, which is usually how the business case is built. MECOTEC discusses financing options together with the quotation.

Published industry price overviews put nitrogen cryosaunas at roughly EUR 20,000-50,000 and electric whole-body chambers at roughly EUR 50,000-205,000, depending on capacity, cooling performance and configuration. A binding figure always requires a concrete configuration and installation situation, so MECOTEC quotes per project.
An electric chamber contains its own refrigeration system, which is the largest part of the hardware cost. In return it needs no nitrogen deliveries, no gas storage and no room oxygen monitoring, so the running cost per session is structurally lower. The relevant comparison is therefore total cost over the service life, not the purchase price alone.
The main items are electricity, annual maintenance and service, and consumables such as gloves, socks and mouth-nose protection. Nitrogen systems add a recurring gas supply cost per session, which electric chambers do not have.
Yes. Financing and leasing are common for commercial buyers. MECOTEC discusses financing options together with the quotation.
That depends on the model, configuration and site preparation. The engine cabinet position, the electrical connection and the room preparation are usually the critical path, which is why MECOTEC plans installation together with the customer before the order is placed.
The cold stimulus depends on the air temperature actually reaching the body – not on a computed windchill or the temperature at the injection nozzle. Published measurements show large gaps between quoted and measured values, and the temperature rises with every person in the chamber. MECOTEC therefore states both the real room temperature and the windchill value for every model.
MECOTEC offers all-inclusive service contracts with remote monitoring, installation, training and on-site service, and warranty periods of up to five years depending on model and service contract. The details are set out in the warranty declaration and the quotation.
